Hazer, smoke machine or low fog — which to choose

Colloquially, all these units are referred to as smoke machines, but they produce three distinct effects. The choice starts with the question of what should be visible: light beams, smoke in time with the music, or haze at floor level.

TypeWhat it doesWhen to chooseOur equipment
HazerWhat it does: a fine haze (haze), in which light beams are visible; on Tour Hazer II, haze output and fan speed are adjusted independentlyWhen to choose: light beams, moving heads, lighting backdrop on stage, in a club and on setOur equipment: Smoke Factory Tour Hazer II; details: hazer rental
Smoke machineWhat it does: heats fluid and releases smoke: short, sharp bursts, and at a low setting continuous smoke (per the manufacturer, below 45% on Spaceball II and below 50% on Captain D.)When to choose: accents in time with the music, stage entrances, DJ set and eventOur equipment: Smoke Factory Spaceball II, Smoke Factory Captain D.; details: smoke machine for an event
Low fog (low fog), colloquially low fog (heavy smoke)What it does: the smoke machine runs on water and water-based fluid, without dry ice or CO₂ cylinders, and produces a low-lying haze at floor levelWhen to choose: first dance, couple's entrance, performance on the dance floorOur equipment: FOS Water Low FOG 2000; details: low fog (heavy smoke) for a wedding
Stage fan (add-on)What it does: distributes haze and creates a wind effect; DMX controlWhen to choose: when haze needs to spread across the stage or set; indoor use onlyOur equipment: Stairville Fan-200 DMX + Case

In practice, a hazer and a smoke machine are often combined in one kit: the hazer provides a lighting backdrop, the smoke machine adds accents.

The effect depends on ceiling height, air conditioning and airflow. Describe the venue in your inquiry and we will suggest a kit.

Smoke machine rental for several days (24h) — prices for 1–4 days (24h)

For multi-day events, we charge the full rate for the first day (24h) and 50% for each additional day. Net prices for equipment only, starting from the lowest:

With or without fluid

Fluid is not included in the device rental price — it is a separate line item, available in Warsaw. You can take the equipment with fluid or without, if you have your own original manufacturer fluid for the device; compatibility is confirmed at the time of order. Net prices per 5 l canister, from the cheapest:

DeviceFluidNet price / 5 l
FOS Water Low FOG 2000Fluid: FOS Fog Liquid CO2 5L (water-based fluid) for the fluid tank; water (approx. 10 l) is poured into the main tankPrice: 90 zł
Smoke Factory Spaceball II, Smoke Factory Captain D.Fluid: Smoke Factory Super Fog Fluid 5L (fluid from the manufacturer's list for both devices)Price: 180 zł
Smoke Factory Tour Hazer IIFluid: Smoke Factory Tour Hazer Fluid 5L (the only fluid approved by the manufacturer)Price: 220 zł

Each device uses the fluid specified by its manufacturer: hazer fluid is not used in a smoke machine, smoke fluid is not used in a hazer, and FOS fluid is not used in Smoke Factory devices — these operate exclusively on original Smoke Factory fluids. Selection guidelines and storage: smoke machine fluid.

Before you book: the venue and smoke detectors

A hazer and a smoke machine produce aerosol that smoke detectors may read as smoke — whether they trigger depends, among other factors, on their type and placement and the airflow in the venue; this is known to the venue administrator and the fire alarm system (SSP) service team. In the Captain D. manual, Smoke Factory warns that smoke may activate smoke detectors; the manuals for Tour Hazer II, Spaceball II, and FOS Water Low FOG 2000 do not mention detectors. No manufacturer guarantees that the alarm will not activate. Therefore, clarify permission for smoke and the matter of detectors with the venue before booking the equipment.

Who decides on the smoke detectors

The venue owner is responsible for the proper functioning of fire protection devices, and within the scope entrusted by contract — the manager or user (Fire Protection Act, art. 4). Temporary deactivation of detectors may only be arranged and carried out by the venue administrator together with the SSP service team, in accordance with the venue's procedure. The rental company does not interfere with detectors: we do not disable, tape over, or remove them.

What to agree with the venue before the event

  1. Permission for haze or smoke — preferably by email or in writing in the venue's regulations.
  2. Fire alarm system: whether it is operational in the venue, what type of detectors are installed, in which zones, and whether the alarm is connected to the fire brigade or a monitoring company.
  3. A person on the venue side (SSP administrator or service), available during the event.
  4. Procedure for smoke detectors: whether the venue permits their temporary deactivation, and if so — who submits the request, when and how, who restores the smoke detectors after the event and where this is documented.
  5. Usage zone: which rooms, how high the ceiling is, where the air intakes, air conditioning and ventilation outlets are.
  6. Ventilation: whether the room can be ventilated and how long it will take after the event.
  7. Evacuation routes: signs and exits must remain visible — a smoke-filled zone must not obstruct the visibility of exits and signs (manufacturer's guideline: visibility no lower than 2 m). Regulations prohibit obstructing access to emergency exits and fire-fighting equipment (MSWiA Regulation of 7 June 2010, § 4 para. 1), so do not position equipment or direct smoke towards exits, fire extinguishers and fire hydrants.
  8. Power supply: the power draw of most devices is listed in the pricing table; when running several devices, arrange separate circuits with the venue.
  9. Sensitive guests: people with asthma, allergies or respiratory conditions should avoid contact with the haze — notify about smoke use and provide a space outside the effect zone.

If the venue does not give consent or no arrangement regarding the smoke detectors can be reached, forgo the smoke rather than interfering with the detectors. Atmosphere can be created with lighting alone — see lighting rental in Warsaw.

Delivery, collection and service

You can collect the equipment yourself or order delivery. The kit contents are confirmed in the offer.

Smoke for a specific occasion

Smoke and haze work together with lighting — see lighting rental, DJ equipment rental and event equipment rental. You can find the right fluid for your machine on the page smoke machine fluid, and the rest of the offer can be found in catalogue.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to rent a smoke machine or hazer in Warsaw?

Net prices for the first day (24h), equipment only: Spaceball II — 250 zł, Tour Hazer II — 350 zł, Captain D. — 350 zł, FOS Water Low FOG 2000 (low fog) — 450 zł. Fan-200 fan as an add-on costs 100 zł. 23% VAT is added to all prices. Fluid and delivery are separate line items in the quote.

How much does rental cost for several days (24h), for example for a weekend?

We charge the full rate for the first day (24h) and 50% for each subsequent day (24h). Tour Hazer II for two days (24h) costs 525 zł net, for three — 700 zł net (861 zł with 23% VAT). Delivery is charged once for the entire event. A breakdown for all devices for 1–4 days (24h) is in the multi-day pricing section.

Rent equipment with or without fluid?

Fluid is a separate line item and is not included in the equipment rental price. You can take it together with the equipment — we select fluid in line with the manufacturer's recommendation, available in Warsaw. Your own fluid must be the original manufacturer's fluid for the device; compatibility is confirmed at the time of order.

Will a smoke machine or hazer trigger the fire alarm?

It can happen. In the Captain D. manual, Smoke Factory warns that smoke may trigger smoke detectors; the Tour Hazer II, Spaceball II, and FOS Water Low FOG 2000 manuals make no mention of smoke detectors. No manufacturer guarantees that the alarm will not activate. Whether smoke detectors react depends, among other things, on their type and placement, and on air movement in the room. Responsibility for the condition of fire protection equipment lies with the owner, manager, or user of the venue (Fire Protection Act, Art. 4); temporary deactivation of smoke detectors may only be arranged and carried out by the venue administrator together with the fire alarm system service provider. We do not disable, tape over, or remove smoke detectors. Before booking, ask the venue about consent for smoke or haze, the type of smoke detectors, and the procedure during the event — a list of questions is in the section "Before you book: venue and smoke detectors".

Is stage smoke harmful to health?

Smoke Factory recommends that people with respiratory or pulmonary conditions, and those prone to allergies, avoid contact with stage fog. According to the safety data sheets, Smoke Factory and FOS Fog Liquid CO2 fluids are not classified as hazardous (CLP) and are not intended for consumption; spilled Smoke Factory fluid causes slipping. Smoke Factory states that its fluids are water-based, oil-free, biodegradable, and non-flammable. Inform guests about the use of smoke, provide a space outside the effect zone, and ventilate the venue after the event.

How does equipment delivery, collection, and night-time collection work?

Personal collection at Gocław (Wał Miedzeszyński 646 b. III) costs 0 zł. Delivery and collection within Warsaw — from 300 zł net per transport, both ways, door-to-door, without carrying in or installation. Night-time collection +200 zł. Delivery with installation and dismantling — from 1,000 zł net. The time of issue and return is agreed at booking.

What to control the devices with and how — do I need a DMX console?

A console is not required: devices can be operated from the panel or controlled via a DMX console; Smoke Factory devices also have a timer, and FOS Water Low FOG 2000 has a wireless remote. Tour Hazer II uses 2 DMX channels (pump and fan), FOS Water Low FOG 2000 — 2 channels (fan and smoke output), Fan-200 — 3 channels. Smoke Factory devices have 5-pin DMX connectors, and Fan-200 has 3- and 5-pin — if your console has a 3-pin output, a 3-pin/5-pin adapter will be needed. In your enquiry, specify what you are using for control.

How much fluid to take to an event?

According to the manufacturer, a 5 l canister in Tour Hazer II lasts approx. 83 hours of operation at a 40% setting, and at higher settings fluid is consumed faster. Smoke machines consume fluid significantly faster — consumption in ml per minute is on the smoke machine fluid page, and the supply for a full night is on the smoke machine for events page.

Is there someone to operate the equipment on-site?

Equipment can be taken without an operator and controlled independently; technical operation can be added to the quote on request. Guidelines from the manufacturer manuals. Smoke Factory: outlet at least 1.5 m from people and heat-sensitive objects (in the English Captain D. manual — 3 m from the nozzle, so maintain a greater distance with this model), visibility in the effect zone no less than 2 m. FOS Water Low FOG 2000: at least 0.5 m from flammable surfaces, floor use only, in a well-ventilated area. Devices must not be left on unattended.

What is the minimum rental period?

One day (24h). Prices for 2–4 days (24h) are in the multi-day pricing section.

Do you deliver equipment outside Warsaw?

Yes, the delivery cost outside Warsaw is included in the quote — write the location and date. FOS Water Low FOG 2000 and Fan-200 work indoors only, and Smoke Factory devices require a dry location (manufacturer: humidity below 80%), so for an outdoor event, describe the conditions in your inquiry.

Do you issue an invoice for a company or a named individual, and how does booking work?

Yes, VAT invoice for a company or a named individual. Prices are quoted net; VAT 23% is added. After you select the equipment, we issue a pro forma invoice and confirm the booking once it is paid, in accordance with the Terms of Cooperation.

Hazer, smoke machine or low fog — what is the difference?

A hazer produces a fine haze that makes light beams visible. A smoke machine produces short bursts of smoke, and at a low setting, a continuous smoke output. A low fog machine (low fog) produces a low-lying fog near the floor, without dry ice. For beam effects on stage, choose a hazer; for accents in time with the music, a smoke machine; and for the first dance, low fog. A comparison is available in the table in the section "Hazer, smoke machine or low fog — what to choose".
