Smoke machine for photo shoots — rental and price list

A film and photo smoke machine is in practice two types of unit: a hazer, which creates a thin haze that makes light beams visible, and a smoke machine, which produces distinct smoke in bursts or continuous smoke. Prices in the table are net for the first day.

Haze or smoke for the frame

Smoke for a photo session, a film set or a music video can play two different roles, and each is done by a different unit.

You will find the full unit selection table on the page smoke machine rental in Warsaw. The hazer alone is described on the page hazer rental.

Repeatable settings between shots

For photo and film, more important than the amount of smoke is that it looks the same in subsequent shots.

Haze density in the frame also depends on air movement, room size and the time since the last smoke output. Plan pauses for the haze to even out and avoid draughts.

Warm-up time in the day schedule

UnitWarm-upWhat it means for the day schedule
Tour Hazer IIWarm-up: approx. 60 sWhat it means for the day schedule: switch it on when the crew is finishing setting the light and the frame; after switching off, the hazer cools down for approx. 60 s and power must not be disconnected until then
Captain D.Warm-up: approx. 7 minWhat it means for the day schedule: switch it on in advance, before the first smoke is needed in a shot
Spaceball IIWarm-up: approx. 7 minWhat it means for the day schedule: as Captain D.

Warm-up applies to switching the unit on, so plan it once at the start of a block of shots, not before each take. At 100% the smoke machine runs for only a few dozen seconds (Captain D. approx. 30–40 s, Spaceball II approx. 22 s), then leave a pause. Do not leave switched-on units unattended.

Noise on set

According to the manufacturer, the Fan-200 fan produces approx. 70 dB at 1 m — when recording sync sound, place it away from the microphones.

Distance from the camera and optics

Studio, loft, film stage: venue approval

Before you book equipment, ask the venue administrator for approval for haze or smoke and about the fire alarm system (SSP) — decisions on smoke detectors belong to the venue and the SSP service provider. We describe the list of questions for the venue in the section on detectors on the page smoke machine rental in Warsaw.

Lighting for haze

Haze shows light beams, so you need directional sources — fixtures or moving heads. Our offer includes, among others, wireless Astera fixtures with DMX programming; you can rent light and smoke in one order. See lighting rental in Warsaw.

How to rent smoke for a set — 4 steps

  1. Enquiry. Write or call: date and hours of the shoot, location and type of room (the units require a dry location), whether you are recording sync sound, what you control from (DMX console or timer), with or without fluid, self-pickup or delivery.
  2. Offer. On working days we send back an offer: availability on your date, price for all days, fluid and logistics.
  3. Pro forma and booking. Once you have chosen the equipment, we issue a pro forma invoice and confirm the booking after it is paid, in accordance with the Terms of Cooperation.
  4. Handover and return. We hand over the equipment in Gocław or deliver it to your location. Handover and return are confirmed with a protocol.

Other occasions

Smoke for an evening with a DJ or for a club is described on the page smoke machine for parties. Other equipment for your event is available in our offer of event equipment rental in Warsaw.

Why Media Rental

01
Settings you can repeat
You set the hazer's haze output and fan separately from a DMX console, so you can recall the value from the test before the next shot.
02
Warm-up in the day schedule
The hazer is ready much faster than the smoke machines: you switch it on while the light is being set, and the smoke machines — in advance.
03
Optics out of the smoke stream
The outlet distances from the manufacturer's manual help keep the camera, lenses and monitors away from fluid and hot droplets.

Frequently asked questions

Haze or smoke for the frame — which to choose?

A hazer, when you want visible light beams and a uniform haze in the background — Smoke Factory describes the Tour Hazer II as a unit for beam effects. A smoke machine, when the smoke is to be a distinct element of the frame: it gives bursts, and at a low setting continuous smoke. Describe the scene in your enquiry, and we will propose a kit.

How do I get the same haze level in subsequent shots?

Save the DMX values from the test on the console — haze output and fan — and recall them before each shot. Density in the frame also depends on air movement, room size and the time since the last smoke output, so leave a pause for the haze to even out and avoid draughts.

How much time should I allow for warming up the units in the day schedule?

The hazer needs approx. 60 s after power-on, the Captain D. and Spaceball II approx. 7 min. Plan the warm-up once at the start of a block of shots: switch the equipment on when the crew is finishing setting the light and the frame. At 100% the smoke machine runs for only a few dozen seconds (Captain D. approx. 30–40 s, Spaceball II approx. 22 s), then it needs a pause.

Is the equipment loud — will I record clean sound?

According to the manufacturer, the Fan-200 fan produces approx. 70 dB at 1 m, so when recording sync sound, place it away from the microphones. Check the noise level of the other units during the test, before the first shot with sound.

How far from the camera and lens should the unit be placed?

Place the camera, lenses and monitors outside the stream from the outlet: fluid and moisture damage electronics, and hot droplets of fluid may occasionally fall from the outlet. Smoke Factory requires at least 1,5 m from the outlet to people and heat-sensitive items; with the Captain D. keep 3 m from the nozzle, as stated in the English manual. Visibility in the room should not drop below 2 m.

Do I need to agree the smoke with the shooting location?

Yes — before booking, ask the administrator of the studio, loft or hall for approval for haze and about the fire alarm system, because decisions on detectors belong to the venue and the SSP service provider. You will find the list of questions for the venue in the section on detectors on the smoke machine rental page.

What lighting should I choose for haze?

Haze shows beams, so you need directional light — fixtures or moving heads; the choice depends on the scene and the camera. Our offer includes, among others, wireless Astera fixtures with DMX programming, which you can rent together with the smoke — see the lighting rental in Warsaw page.

Do you deliver equipment to the set and collect it after night shoots?

Yes. Delivery and pickup within Warsaw costs from 300 zł net — one transport there and back, without carrying in or setup; delivery with setup and dismantling starts from 1 000 zł net. When the shoot ends late at night, you add Night pickup +200 zł. Outside Warsaw we state the travel cost in the offer.

Can I get an operator on set?

We rent equipment with delivery — you control the hazer from a DMX console or the built-in timer. Technical support can be added to the offer on request.
